brainwashing

Can you imagine being changed into a totally different personality, or being under the complete control of another person? In The Manchurian Candidate  written by Richard Condon in 1984, the author tells of an American prisoner brainwashed by Pavolain techniques of conditioning, so that he was at the complete command of his communist masters. He was brainwashed so in depth that he was able to murder without any hesitation. Although this book is fiction, it is based on the true stories experiences of American prisoners in the Korean War. During the war, North Koreans and Chinese communists really did develop techniques for influencing the mind. Their method was called "hsi nao", or cleansing the mind. The first man to write in detail about these Chinese techniques was Edward Hunter, who coined the term brainwashing in 1950.
When people first heard about the terrifying news that American prisoners in history desired to stay in the enemy country, Americans were frightened by this new and mysterious communist knowledge and power of mind control. Once research about brainwashing was performed, it became clear that the communists were not superhuman or had any magical powers. The techniques that the communists used were based on the teachings from ancient Chinese teachings along with similar techniques that were used during the Spanish Inquisition by evangelists and by the Puritan witchcraft trials. The communists were unable to develop the methods as sufficiently to control a person to the degree described in The Manchurian Candidate, but some people believe that the examples from that book are not necessarily impossible for the future. However, the brainwashing that the communists did use on POW (prisoners of war) reformed thoughts that included keeping them in filth, sleep deprivation, psychological harassment, and partial sensory deprivation. Shockingly, once American soldiers started coming back as communists, some of the  unbrainwashed soldiers decided they had to become involved with the new trend.

In order for mind control to be successful, the person that is being brainwashed must have a deep conflict within himself. The conflict must be used to make them feel great guilt and self-betrayal is encouraged.  Captors must make a massive attack on their identity through extreme torture or ways in which they could wear the person down. This person is next placed in a situation where they desperately need the support of a group. A group (cult) is provided that supports and encourages the aims of the reforming leader. When the breaking point is reached, where that the person fears total psychological and physical elimination from the world. The person begins to channel their guilt and begins to adopt the cult's point of view. The re-education starts when the person adopts a negative identity such as a selfish and insensitive person and relinquishes their original positive self-image. The person begins to see communism, religion, or whatever it is, as the answers to all their deficiencies.
